Seminar Objectives

This course instructs new users of the HEAD Measurement System on proper operation and setup. Making effective measurements as well as background (theory and history overview) of artificial head technology are also covered.

• Overview of Artificial Head Technology, and Reasons for Binaural Data Acquisition
• The Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) and Normalizing Equalizations for HMS (FF, ID, DF; the HMS as a calibrated measurement microphone system)
• HMS Hardware and Features
  • Analog HEAD Measurement Systems (HMS II, HMM II)
  • Digital HEAD Measurement Systems (HMS III)
• Making Good Recordings
• The Importance of Binaural Listening to Binaural Data
• Issues Regarding All Acoustic Measurements (microphones and/or HEADs)
  • Standards
  • Tolerances
  • Effect of Soundfield Conditions vs. Microphone Response Types, on Achieved Accuracy
